Stay Home & Stay Safe | A Guide to Hawaii Homeschool Programs 2020

Aloha everyone! I’ve created this blog for my clients that are looking for alternative schooling options for their children in Hawaii. There are many interesting ideas and homeschool services that are available throughout the State of Hawaii, and some of the schools listed below are also nationwide. Throughout this article, you can read about a variety of Hawaii homeschool options: charter schools, Waldorf-inspired schools, tech-savvy schools, and more. The list includes options from Preschool until 12th grade.

Statewide Hawaii Charter School Homeschool Programs

Harmony Education Services 

Harmony Education Services offers homeschool options for K-12th grade. They understand that every child has different learning patterns, passions, and interests and that’s why they provide customized learning programs for all ages. To participate as a student in Hawaii, families first need to enroll with one of Harmony’s partner public schools. Curriculum packages can be purchased directly through Harmony. 

Hawaii Technology Academy 

Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) offers homeschool courses for Elementary and Highschool. The curriculum at HTA is a virtual e-learning platform that utilizes Adobe Connect and Zoom for classes. Students have direct interaction with instructors, advisors, and their classmates. This blended model allows students to remain engaged while socializing and actively participating in their education community. 

Myron B. Thompson Academy 

Myron B. Thompson Academy is based out of downtown Honolulu. It’s a public charter school for highschool students throughout the State of Hawaii. Students have the option to do 100% distance learning, and in pre-COVID 19 times, that also have an option to do group classes at the Honolulu headquarters. Definitely get in touch with the school to learn more about their current and future options. The Academy is known for having an accelerated curriculum and interactive virtual instruction. In addition, upper grade students have an opportunity to specialize in Computer Science, Environmental, and Biomedical course studies so they can begin to make achievable plans for college and university courses.

Nationwide Homeschool Programs

Blossom & Root 

Blossom & Root is a homeschool education option for preschool thru 4th grade. It was founded in 2015 by a mother who was seeking a nature-based homeschooling option for her own children. This is a Waldorf-inspired program that places emphasis on a love of nature, literature, the arts, and play. Blossom & Root also offers Book Seeds programs; STEM-centered, and nature-based mini-unit series.

Abeka 

Abeka offers both faith-based and non faith-based homeschool programs for student in 1st-6th grade. The curriculum is largely inspired by a traditional philosophy of education that helps teachers teach, and helps students learn. Teachers are empowered to focus on the needs of each student, and the materials that they need to learn. Once the students have grasped what has been taught, new concepts and skills are added in context creating a sense of ‘spiral learning.’ At every level, every student is able to learn, comprehend, and master new learnings. Abeka’s focus to promote a desire for life-long learning in every student. 

K12  

K12 has been a leader in K-12 grade level online education since 2000. It’s one of the largest homeschool programs in the United States; offering a hands-on curriculum directly into the homes. Their various curriculums allow students to work at their own pace. The courses are created by master teachers, scientists, subject-matter experts, technologists, designers, researchers, and writers. Benefits of this are tailored materials for the age and skill level of each student, interactive activities, plus accurate and engaging content. K12’s quality assurance specialists also incorporate feedback from parents through focus groups, surveys, product testing, and round-table discussions.

If you’re looking for great shopping on Oahu, you do not need to head to Town! Honestly, West Oahu is probably one of the very best places to shop in all of the Hawaiian Islands. 

Throughout the area, you can enjoy shopping at boutiques, shopping malls, big chain stores, and even outlet stores. If you’re looking for fashion, head to the newly built Ka Makana Ali’i Shopping Center, Pearl Ridge, or the Premium Outlets in Waikele. 

Besides large shopping centers, there’s also an abundance of smaller outdoor shopping malls like Kapolei Village Center, Kapolei Commons, Kapolei Marketplace, and Ko Olina Center. You can find everything under the sun including clothing, beauty, home accessories, appliances, furniture, and grocery stores.

In the past 5+ years, Kapolei has become a real hub for all sorts of shopping with additions like the new Ka Makana Ali’i Shopping Center, Costco, Target, Ross, T.J. Maxx, Pier 1, Marshalls, Ulta Beauty, Sally Beauty Supply, Petco, and more. 

One thing is for sure, shopping in West Oahu is super convenient and fun!

Take a Hike

Whether you’re visiting or living on Oahu, one of the hands-down-best-things-to-do is to go hiking. Throughout the Island of Oahu, there’s an incredible array of hiking trails– from mild to adventurous. A common misconception about hiking is that it’s always strenuous. In fact, many Oahu hikes are more like a trail walk. 

When hiking in West Oahu, you can hike along the coastline, find scenic vistas, enjoy tropical scenery, and see wildlife. Without a doubt, hiking in Hawaii is always a rewarding, magical, and inspiring experience!

Although hiking boots are not always necessary when hiking through Oahu, a pair of sneakers with tread is highly recommended. Wherever you choose to hike in Hawaii, always remember to hike with a buddy, check the weather, where sturdy shoes, bring water, and sun protection. Safety should be your #1 priority.

Beach Hopping

Well, this is an obvious point…

Whether you live on Oahu part-time, full-time, or just visiting – Go to all the beaches! Throughout the Hawaiian Islands, gorgeous beaches decorate the coastlines. Truly, it’s amazing. On Oahu, you’ll find an array of beaches that differ from the rest. Surfing beaches, snorkeling beaches, beaches that are perfect for a sunset stroll, and more. 

No matter your purpose, there’s a beach in West Oahu that’s perfect for all and any occasion. One of the coolest things about beach hopping in West Oahu is that there’s a variety for all activities: sunbathing, a picnic, surfing, surf lessons, playing with kids in the sand, picking shells, and more. Enjoy!
